FREEBIE FRIDAY! BOOT CUFFS KNITTING PATTERN!

// October 26th, 2012 // 1 Comment » // Knitting

I am a huge fan of the layered look; layered sweaters, layered hair, layered pastries, layer cakes, etc….and I was thrilled when fashion designers came up with the boot cuff or topper to layer your boots! If you want to DIY, it’s super easy to make your own! They are great for stash busting or left over yarn! Hint; they are great Christmas gifts and knit up in less than 2 hours!

You can use any worsted weight wool and size 7 double pointed needles for these boot cuffs,, but really, you could use any yarn you want as long as you adjust the needle size accordingly. You could also use the pattern below and then add different stitches at the top! You can even knit up quick ones for Halloween!

Boot Cuff Pattern:

Materials

Worsted Weight Wool

Size 7 DPNs

Darning needle to sew in ends

Cast on 44 stitches

Ribbing: K2 P2 and continue this ribbing until you’re happy with its length

Body: Knit in the round until piece measures about 6″

Top: K2 P2 and continue this ribbing until you’re happy with its length
(Or make up your own fancy design for the top)

Bind off all stitches, weave in any loose the ends.

Happy Knitting!

Head In A Bag – Drawstring Purse

// October 26th, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Needlearts, Stich, Felt, Sewing

31 Days of Halloween – Day 17

Today’s post was inspired by a picture I saw on Facebook. The picture was of a girl walking down the street with a drawstring bag hanging from her wrist. The bag looked as if it was carrying a severed head because there was a face protruding from the inside out. As soon as I saw it, I KNEW I had to make one!

You can watch the video walk through below.

The outside of the bag is burlap and the lining is green cotton. I created my pattern and sewed the outer bag and lining bag separately.

I added more prominent features to a paper mache’ mask that I had by adding paperclay to the lips, cheeks and nose.

I inserted the face in between the outer bag and liner and glued it into place. I stitched the top of the bag and added champagne colored ribbon for the drawstring.

I have to admit I am thrilled with how it turned out and I LOVE the looks I get when I carry it around. It is a full size purse and since I sewed it on the sewing machine, it is extremely sturdy.

If you are interested in purchasing a head in a bag, please leave me a comment and I will get in touch with you.

See you tomorrow!!!!!!

Haunted House Mixed Media Project

// October 22nd, 2012 // Comments Off // Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

I whipped together a cute tiny little canvas Halloween House.

ONE HAND SAM

// October 21st, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog

I know-I know- Every month it seems lately that I am doing Halloween Projects. But I love them and they sit in my house all year long. I have found I am not the only one who does this so my weirdness isn’t all that weird! THIS is why I love Amazing Mold Putty and Resin.
My husband has a figure that sits in his office. I stare at it every time I go in there and think…I want to mold that! Well he finally gave in and let me but scared me so much about the figures hair I kinda held the mold a bit cock eyed and one arm did not form well. (DO NOT WORRY HIS FIGURES HAIR WAS NOT HARMED! LOL)
But that did not bother me-it gave the figure much more of the look I love! Here is my mold

Once I took it out of mold I poked holes in it while a bit pliable. Then I gave it a dry brush of white paint, black eyes and red in his mouth and dripping out. I added wool hair, green of course, and added wire so I could hang him. He is now hanging in my Art room in front of me inspiring me as I work! Here are my finished pictures. If you have not tried this product it is amazing. The things you can make and do with it will amaze you! It is one of my favorite Craft items.

How To Turn ANY Card Into A Painting

// October 8th, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog, madeitmonday, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

On my personal blog, I am doing a 31 Days of Halloween special all month long. Each day of the month I am posting a work in progress, finished project or previous project. Each project has a Halloween theme and will be different every day. I am even going to be having a GIVEAWAY this week :D

Due to technical difficulties, I was unable to post for yesterday’s 31 Days of Halloween, but never fear! I will be more than making up for it today :D

I was a guest presenter on The Odd Show’s World Card Making Day Marathon, but unfortunately, Google+ and my computer do not get along and after TWO different attempts, I was not able to do my full presentation.

I decided to record the finishing touches for the card, and then demonstrate how to turn ANY card into a painting in just a few easy steps. You can watch the full video tutorial below.

SO! For 31 Days of Halloween Day 7 – I am sharing the photos from the card.

AAAAAAaaaaaand, for Day 8 – I am sharing the video tutorial for the painting :D

See you tomorrow!

Weekly Wednesday Linky Party #2

// October 3rd, 2012 // Comments Off // Art Jewelry, Beads, & Glass, Bath & Body, Blog, Crochet, Kids Crafts, Knitting, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Needlearts, Stich, Felt, Sewing, Wednesday Crafty Links

It is Wednesday and time for Weekly Wednesday Linky Party #2.   Last week  was full of growing pains and beginners bad luck.  We had trouble  that I believe came from the provider so this weeks brings a new provider.

We want to see all of your recent projects in any medium but this week we especially can’t wait to see your spooky and creepy Halloween projects.  Upload your Halloween wreath, polymer clay bat necklace or mixed media haunted house project.  We want to see it all.

How to be a great party guest:

1. Be sure you are uploading ONLY items HANDMade by YOU.  That means no Etsy shops (specific items you are selling in an ETSY shop are fine), giveaways, contests, sponsored posts, or even recipes- although this a Halloween party so a really cool party project would be terrific.

2.  You must upload a specific project rather than your entire blog or FLickr set.

3. Please be sure to mingle with the other party guests by click on a few Links that catch your eye. Leaving a comment on those blogs is always nice.

4.  Link back to our party in your post so your readers can find us.  We can never have too many party guests.

5.  Grab our button and place it somewhere on your blog.

6.  The party will run until Monday at 8 pm.   Leave a comment here anytime this week and tell us what projects YOU enjoy the most then stop by on Tuesday to see what projects WE thought deserved special recognition.

I made it! Mixed media Halloween pumpkin

// October 1st, 2012 // Comments Off // madeitmonday, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

20120930-222757.jpg

I got an invitation to attend a pumpkin carving party yesterday…an excellent reason to break out the white foam gourd and some sangria. With a bit of help from these supplies,
I created this masterpiece that I can save for years to come. It was pretty easy. First, I painted random bats with the lumiere, then let it dry to be the base for the Ranger distress crackle paint in soot color. Next I did all the swirls with glitter paint. Then crackle and finally a bit of glossy black accents. Done!

Mixed Media Altered Mannequin Head

// September 25th, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Tuesday Shmoozeday

It’s Tuesday!!! And that can only mean one thing… Tuesday Schmoozeday on Things Crafty :D
I started this piece on my LIVE show today, but I didn’t have enough time to finish her, so I figured I would write up a little post and explain what I did after the show.

You can watch the first hour of the process here. You must be a member of the Tuesday Schmoozeday Group to watch the show. It is simple and free to join, plus we have tons of great FREE and paid classes for you to enjoy!

To recap – I got this mannequin head at a craft swap I attended a few weeks ago. I gave her a solid coat of black paint, then covered her in 4 inch (ish) wide strips of cheesecloth using clear tacky glue. I pressed the cheesecloth into the crevasses of her face, then added a few tattered pieces of cheesecloth for hair.

I needed to let the glue dry a bit, so I moved on to her neck. I added a candy cane stripe of black grosgrain ribbon and an second candy cane stripe of black and white satin ribbon all the way down her neck.

Next, I added some black glitter to the tips of a few cheapy black roses before gluing them into her hair. That was all I was able to get finished during my one hour live show.

*whew!*

After the show I strung several loops of pearl trim around her neck and glued them into place on various spots on her neck. I made the loops all different sizes to add interest.

I also added a few more flower petals to fill in some of the empty spots on the roses in her hair.

After the glue was dry, I began working on her face. I created her lips and a triangular nose shape with clear tacky glue and sprinkled on a heavy amount of black glitter. Next, I drew circles around her eyes with the glue and covered that in glitter as well. I also coated an acrylic stamp with a thin layer of glue, stamped her forehead and lightly covered that with glitter. I think I may want to go back and re-do that spot because I want to be able to see the design better.

For the finishing touch, I pulled out some “real” fake eyelashes that I have for art dolls and gave them two coats of white craft paint. Next, I brushed them with clear tacky glue and then sprinkled on some clear, iridescent microbeads. I used crystal lacquer to glue them into place on her eyes.

I am sooooooo happy with her! I have a few more of these blank mannequin heads and I can’t WAIT to alter another one!!!!!!

I will be sure to share any future heads with all of you :D

I wasn’t going to add this photo, but, I just love the way her hair is blowing in the breeze here LOL!

Blended Stains

// September 20th, 2012 // Comments Off // Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

Time for another Compendium of Curiosity Vol 2 Tag.  This week is all about Blended Stains (pg 45).  Of course this challenge is all based on the instructions in Tim Holtz’s amazing book of the same name and because it is Tim’s intellectual property I cannot share the trade secrets behind the how-to.  Ah, but I can share how to make the cute ticket that I added to my tag (below).

The challenge is, as always, hosted by Linda at Studio L3 and this week Simon Says Stamp is offering a $25 gift certificate to one randomly drawn participant.

First, I apologize for taking the pictures on my nasty silicon mat- it’s a mess but I was not paying attention and didn’t realize it until I was editing.  Second, I took them horizontally and they don’t convert to vertical without becoming freakishly distorted…. so I’m stuck with a weird horizontal photo.

Personally I think the bow is just fabulous.  I used the Blended Stains technique on the seam binding as well as the background of the tag.  This ribbon was made using two colors of Distress StainSpiced Marmalade and Dried Marigold.  I love the results.

Ticket Tutorial

I’m having an addiction to tickets right now.  Vintage is always best but if you can’t get vintage tickets then making them specific to your project works as well.

1. I started with a die cut using Tim Holtz Alterations Decorative Strip Ticket Strip.  The cardstock is old piece of Basic Grey that already had a cobweb design on it but you could start with a solid cardstock as well.

2. Begin by inking the edges with a Blending Tool and Dried Marigold Distress Ink.  Don’t cover the entire surface but cover almost all of it-leaving the center lighter than the edges.

3. Ink the edges with a Blending Tool (use the same  foam pad) and Spiced Marmalade Distress Ink.

 This time you want to ink toward the center but not as far as you did in step 2.

 4.  Finally you want to tip the edges with Black Soot Distress Ink and the Blending Tool (I use a new pad for each color family).

 5.  This is what you want the strip to look like after you have inked the edges.  Stamp the Halloween ticket from Stampers Anonymous Odds and Ends on to each ticket using black Archival Ink.

Done!
