Mixed MEdieology Monday 5/13/13 – It is OK To Make Crap Art

// May 14th, 2013 // No Comments » // art dolls, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Stencils, Uncategorized

Have you ever been working on an art piece and it suddenly takes a turn you were not expecting? A turn for the worse??? That’s what happened to me with this week’s Mixed MEdieology Monday project. I had one vision in my head when I started working on the piece and about half way through it started spiraling out of control, down a black hole.

When I first began this project, I knew I wanted to turn one of the ‘prettier’ male paper dolls into a girl with long hair in a big poofy dress. In the end I accomplished that, but she doesn’t look anything like I had hoped and I am not happy with the end result.

I am really happy with the background and the little bird in her hand and I even like the little kitten. I am not so happy with the big poofy dress and long, flowing hair ;P

When I glued the book pages down, I didn’t realize that the paper doll legs were going to PROTRUDE so much. I should have stopped right there and cut them off, but I figured I would be able to camouflage them with the paint. I was wrong. LOL!  I’m not sure if you can tell it from the pictures, but you can CLEARLY see the outline of the legs and feet of the original doll. I continued to paint the dress and it just got worse and worse with every layer. I actually edited out SEVERAL steps of the dress evolution. If I hadn’t this video would have been MUCH longer and I don’t think you would want to sit through that :)   I also got her hair too big and uneven and it looks like a mop just sitting on top of her head.  I’m still not sure how I managed to do that, but by the time I realized it, it was too late to fix it.

2013-05-13 11.55.39

I normally don’t talk about all of the screw-ups that happen while I am working on these projects because I am usually very happy with how my pieces turn out. I can usually turn it around in the end and ‘fix’ anything I ‘mess up’ along the way. This time, however…. not so much. I decided to tell you about what I DON’T like because I want you to know that even after all this time, I still make crap art. I still make things I am unhappy with and I still screw up some of these projects beyond ‘repair.’  I am telling you this because I want you to know it is OK  to make crap art on occasion. Let me repeat that… IT. IS. OK.

It is ok to make pieces that you are unhappy with or just plain out DON’T LIKE! That doesn’t make you a ‘bad’ artists. It doesn’t even make you any LESS of an artist. It just means you made a piece that you don’t really like. And that’s ok!

It is ok because …….

1) Art is subjective. Just because YOU don’t particularly like it, doesn’t mean NO ONE will like it. (And besides, who cares if no one likes it!)

2) You are probably on the verge of a breakthrough and need to push past the bonds that have been holding you in place.  Let me elaborate on each of these.

Art is subjective – Last year I made a crazy looking little monster thing for one of my groups. I HATED that damn monster! I thought it was the WORST piece of crap I had ever made! I thought for SURE no one else would like it and I was embarrassed to even show a photo of it.  I wanted to get rid of it, so I put it on my vendor table at the only craft fair I have ever participated in. That ugly little scraggly monster was the FIRST thing that sold that day! I could not believe it! And the lady that bought it…. absolutely LOVED it. She even asked me how she could mount it on her refrigerator!!! To this day I still think it is the worst piece of crap I have EVER made, but that doesn’t matter because it was EXACTLY what another person had been searching for.

You are probably on the verge of a break though – My creative journey has been a roller coaster and I think most of you can probably relate to this.  I go though phases  where I am really liking most of what I create. I feel confident and inspired and I am usually very satisfied with the finished product. This is the ‘going up’ part of the ride.  This is the easy part. Then I get to the point where I feel like I have lost my muse. I don’t really WANT to make any art and when I do make something, I feel like it is ok, but not my best work. That is the ‘sitting on the top of the hill, rocking back and forth, waiting for the drop’ part of the ride. And then… it happens… Nothing I make turns out right, I feel like I have forgotten every skill I know and I make a BUNCH of CRAP art. That is the ‘plummeting uncontrollably face first to disaster’ part of the ride.

*THAT* is the very reason I DO NOT ride roller coasters in real life. I HATE that feeling. I don’t like not being in control! I don’t like that feeling of falling to my death with nothing to stop me but a metal bar and shoulder pads!!!!

But what happens at the end of EVERY one of those drops???? There is a huge curve and you are thrust back up into the sky, with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face.  The rest of the ride is a thrill, filled with ups and downs, but in the end you have a huge smile on your face. (Well, not me, obviously, but so I’ve bee told by people who enjoy that sort of thing.)

Did I lose you back there???? Are you still with me?

I know that was long winded, but what I am trying to say is this – In my experience, when I hit one of those drops, I am usually going through some sort of artistic transformation and growth. My style is usually changing and evolving and I feel like I am struggling to keep it the same. I am a creature of habit. I don’t like change and so I like to keep things the same. I don’t want my art to change because I am confident and comfortable with how it *IS,* so instead of letting go and letting my art evolve as it will, I resist, pull back and fight it every step of the way. And in doing so… I create a ton of (in my opinion) CRAP art along the way.

It isn’t until I *finally* let go and let my MUSE take control that I get past the crap and move on to the next phase in my artistic journey.

*WHEW!!!*

I know I babbled on and on today, but I hope it helped you to see that it is ok to make art that you don’t like.  If art brings you joy, then you must create… even through the rough patches, because those rough patches are what bring you to greatness.

~If there is no struggle, there is no progress.Frederick Douglass ~

I hope you enjoy my process, long and unsuccessful as it may be, but more importantly, I hope you take to heart what I have said. Relax. Play. Just enjoy the process. Let the muse guide you and you will never go wrong <3

I will be back on Thursday with this week’s Thrift Shop Thursday haul.

Mixed Media Kind of Weekend

// December 3rd, 2012 // 1 Comment » // madeitmonday, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

This weekend was a creative kind of weekend.  After sending and receiving some amazing artwork for the ATC swaps I was inspired to create.  The starting point was “What if…” and I asked the question “What if butterflies never left?”  That led me on to this adventure.

I began by painting the tree trunk using a VERY heavy coat of Tim Holtz Distress Crackle in Crushed Corduroy.  As the paint dried it developed large cracks that gave the feel of old bark on a tree trunk.  I added a base of white and blue for the background and added some white to the tree branches to make it look like snow had settled on the tree.

Next I used a glue stick to adhere the butterflies to my page and used a light coat of acrylic medium to seal them in.  I used a wash of white paint and acrylic medium to cover some of the butterflies and used a brighter blue to outline the largest butterfly.  I continued to add paint, then sand down until I was happy with what was showing through, and what was hidden behind my paint, then I added one final layer of acrylic medium.  Once that was dry I outlined the painted butterflies with watercolor crayons to add a little depth to them, and I mixed a little pearlescent powder to my acrylic medium and painted my large butterfly.  The combination gives it a light opalescent shimmer.

I added some music to help frame the butterfly collage and did the same process of applying paint and sanding down until I found a look I was happy with.  Then I found and cut out the word ‘HOME’ from a magazine.  I applied that with acrylic medium and coated it with layers of paint/medium mix.  Finally I traced the letters with a black permanent marker and once again added paint until I was happy with how it looked.

While trying to find something to put in the empty place where the quote is I used an acrylic stamp and my acrylic medium and stamped a few snowflakes onto the background then I lightly sprinkled it with a clear glitter.

Finally, using shell paper (rice paper with bits of shell embedded) I added journaling strips and wrote my quote.  I added a few more strips of shell paper randomly to tie it in and used my whitewash technique on these strips.

I hope you enjoy this collage, and find inspiration to create something yourself.

I Made it Monday: Journal Pages

// November 12th, 2012 // 1 Comment » // madeitmonday

Over the past couple of weeks I have been recovering from some major oral surgery.  But I didn’t let that keep me from working in my journal.  I find that, for me, Art Journaling is a great way to work through whatever it is I’m going through.   Another thing I love to do in my journals is quote pages.  Quote pages are pages that either contain a quote or are inspired by one.  Sometimes these pages are just an abstract background with a quote or designed around the quote I’ve chosen.  That part usually depends on the day.  Here are some of the pages I have worked on over the past couple of weeks.

“Decide that you want it more than you are afraid of it.” Bill Cosby

“Like a bird on a wire, Like a drunk in a midnight wife, I have tried in my way to be free.” Bird on a Wire by Leonard Cohen

Doodling over paint with Sharpie Brush pen and white paint pen accents.

“The trees that are slow to grow bear the most fruit.” Moliere

Tuesday Schmoozeday Art Journal Play

// October 2nd, 2012 // Comments Off // Kids Crafts, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Things Crafty Classes, Tuesday Shmoozeday

Today on my Tuesday Schmoozeday I chose to talk about Art journals. I concentrated on healing ones but discussed many other types, and how easy it is with one piece of paper to make 4 different pages to use.
I also discussed that you do not have to be an Artist and draw and sketch, you can use magazines and old books to cut words and pictures from to make your very own art journal page and then add them together as you do more. Here is the link to the show’s replay and if you have any questions…just ask!
I also put in the discussion section a question if you would like to do the meditative project I did at the end of my show-by drawing a line in all directions and coloring them in with whatever you have around the house. I love this form of meditation and it’s very centering to me.
I love comments and any questions so do not hesitate! We all love the interaction with you! Don’t forget to check out my Knitting 101 Class and I will have others coming in the future!
Here are a few pictures from today.

MY ART JOURNAL PAGE FROM LIVE SHOW

// July 19th, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Uncategorized

I had such a blast on my live show the other day. We have a few kinks to work out early on in the show, but we got them ironed out rather quickly. I haven’t been on live in months and months so that was my first foray into Live again, so I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit nervous, but by the end of the show, I thought it came out good. On the live show, I showed how I like to do layers in a Moleskine journal using different techniques and layers. Here is the live show-HERE (Just give a few minutes as we were figuring out before it starts!)

In this video, I show how I added a paper butterfly using three different sizes for added dimension. I glittered and played with a few different techniques to give you an idea of the variety of things you can try and play with. You can see that HERE

I love having journals to play with and practice in because you really don’t have to have an intended outcome. You can just PLAY! In the future I will show you how to make an inexpensive journal using paper lunch bags from the dollar store OR just from scrapbook paper you have at home with string or yarn. You do not have to be a professional binder in the way that I do it. I think art should be fun and if you don’t try out new techniques from time to time, how will you know what works and what doesn’t? Plus, you might just discover your new favorite technique!

Any questions just ask and I will help you or one of the many talented people on our http://thingscrafty.ning can help. It is free to sign up and there are so many exciting things on there and such talented people. Please enjoy the videos and subscribe to mine at Knittingandthings and the Polymerclaytv/thingscrafty youtubes. Thank you

My Art Journal Kit

// January 3rd, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

I thought that today, instead of a journal page, I’d show you my Art Journal Kit.

These are the things I use ALL the time. If I am at home, I’ll of course add stuff from my stash.

However, this cute little suitcase is small enough to travel with, and work in the car, since the hubby does the driving on long trips.

I’m a lucky girl!

This sweet little suitcase is from around 1980…I remember my mom having one very similar when I was a kid, and I even used it on overnights…I purchased it from an Etsy shop for about $10.00 ! It’s not quite big enough to put a 12×12 scrapbook inside.

Front zipper pocket holds the journals I’m currently working in. One is a Moleskine watercolor book,

and the other is a Strathmore Visual Journal book. Love them both, and they are different sizes.

So here’s the inside view. Inky Binky (aka flour sack towel), masking tape, circle punch, etc.

In the pocket that’s inside the lid, I have some wall paper scraps, paper scraps, a baggie of cut out words, and a piece of foam core board about 8×10″. It makes a great work surface.

Here you see foam stamps (generic shapes, flowers, flourishes), paint brushes,

a small pair of scissors (Wescott brand, the BOMB DIGGITY!!), double ended Sharpie marker, masking tape,

tube of white acrylic paint, circle punch, comb, brayer.

Pearlescent watercolors (purchased inexpensively at Hobby Lobby), regular watercolors,

a couple of drawing pencils, pen.

Baggie of small tools: toothpicks, large bottle lid, small bottle lid, water brush, blending stomp,

q-tips, etc.

I am a paint junkie, which is why I have both acrylic and watercolor paints!

I was THRILLED when Ranger put the Studio line paints in itty bitty bottles.

Now I can have a ton of acrylic paints in a small space. Yay cloud!

You’ll also noticed a bottle of Distress Stickles- Rock Candy. This stuff is good on EVERYTHING!!

Little bottle of Glossy Accents for those times you want a wet glue.

Faber Castell Gelatos.

Faber Castell goodies- gesso, glaze, matte medium in little tubes.

**LOVE!!**

I keep all this wet stuff in an old clear plastic box that a Stampin Up stamp set came in. It works wonderfully and fits in the case great!

There are three things I have in here as well that you can’t see: a baggie of baby wipes, a few folded paper towels,

and a roll of Miracle Tape (dry adhesive. AWESOME stuff).

So my art journal kit consists of:

1. Cute little suitcase

2. Journals

3. Watercolor paints- pearl and regular

4. Acrylic paints- as many colors in itty bitty bottles as I can cram in there!

5. Masking tape, Miracle Tape, Glossy Accents

6. Scissors

7. Comb (to drag through paint and stuff)

8. Double ended sharpie marker

9. Journaling pen

10. A couple of drawing pencils

11. Bag of little stuff- toothpicks, q-tips, bottle caps, etc

12. Paint brushes and waterbrushes

13. A few mediums in itty bitty tubes- glaze, gesso, matte medium

14. Rock Candy Distress Stickles

15. Gelatos (ya GOTTA try them!)

16. paper scraps, wallpaper scraps, cut out words

17. foam stamps

18. Circle punch

19. Piece of foam core board to use as a work surface

20. Mini Mister with water
