// March 5th, 2013 // 2 Comments » // Art Exchanges & Swaps, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Monthly Challenge

Have you seen the latest Journal Swap on Crafty Link?  If not, check out the information here, and keep an eye out for the swap next month!  And don’t forget to visit the Swap Page on CraftyLink.com.

Anyway, one of the prompts for this month’s journal page was ‘Joyful’.  Being that it is starting to become spring, flowers will be blooming soon and we will be celebrating Easter I thought how much more joyful could you get?  So, this is my creation.

Be Joyful

Well, as I was creating this I fell in love.  I don’t think that I will be able to part with this piece.  I think it may find a place on the wall in my dining room.  I am sorry to tell my partner that they will NOT receive this piece, but I promise I will create something special for you, too!

I is not too late to join our Monthly Journal Page or ATC swap.  Check out Crafty Link for details on how you can join in the fun!

Mixed Media, can you find the Art Kit?

// December 13th, 2012 // Comments Off // Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Monthly Challenge

‘Tis the Christmas season.  Combine that with the Winter Wonderland Kit available on Crafty Link I had to get to work.  This wintery, romantic kit is perfect for art featuring the solemn reflections brought forth with the season or frolicking in the snow.

One of the images reminded me of a Victorian wallpaper.  That lead to a peaceful evening in a warm living room.  Some of the papers also led to a feel of ‘pine boughs’.  I printed the background on some light weight paper, and the ‘pine’ on heavy green card stock.

Using some light molding paste and a crafter’s workshop stencil I created a wood grain on some cardstock then painted it in a dark brown.  Cutting out the brown papers into strips, I formed them into a window frame then used yet another pattern from the kit as the background in my window.  I added crackle medium to my window panes then layered paint, wiping it off and layering it on again until I was happy with the way the window looked.

While my window was drying I applied the ‘wallpaper’ to a sheet of heavy watercolor paper and layered on dark paints to tone down the colors a little.  (After all, it is a night time scene as you will soon see…).  I then outlined the area my tree would be using a light color of paint, and I added paint to give the idea of a wall and a floor.

Once I was happy with my background I applied my window then began to layer in my tree.  First I used some Distress Crackle for the trunk.  I like using this for the trunk because the crackles can add a tree trunk texture.  Once it was dry I used a dark brown paint to add in the trunk detail and red to add my tree skirt.

I tore the green paper I had printed my downloaded paper on into irregular triangles, making sure I had some rough edges to work with.  Using a combination of gel medium, brown acrylic paint and green Tattered Angles Glimmer Glam I layered piece after piece to create my tree, and when it was done I added dots of paints to my tree for lights.  Finally I used acrylic paint, gel pens, glitter and watercolors to add a star at the top of my tree.

Finally, seeing I had a blank area on my canvas I added a fireplace with a cozy fire and some final trimming to my tree and my window.

Once I was happy there I used a gel pen and a sharpie to add the words “O Holy Night”  to the creation.  I hope you enjoy this piece.  I am looking forward to sharing with you the other pieces I have in the works!

Mixed Media Kind of Weekend

// December 3rd, 2012 // 1 Comment » // madeitmonday, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

This weekend was a creative kind of weekend.  After sending and receiving some amazing artwork for the ATC swaps I was inspired to create.  The starting point was “What if…” and I asked the question “What if butterflies never left?”  That led me on to this adventure.

I began by painting the tree trunk using a VERY heavy coat of Tim Holtz Distress Crackle in Crushed Corduroy.  As the paint dried it developed large cracks that gave the feel of old bark on a tree trunk.  I added a base of white and blue for the background and added some white to the tree branches to make it look like snow had settled on the tree.

Next I used a glue stick to adhere the butterflies to my page and used a light coat of acrylic medium to seal them in.  I used a wash of white paint and acrylic medium to cover some of the butterflies and used a brighter blue to outline the largest butterfly.  I continued to add paint, then sand down until I was happy with what was showing through, and what was hidden behind my paint, then I added one final layer of acrylic medium.  Once that was dry I outlined the painted butterflies with watercolor crayons to add a little depth to them, and I mixed a little pearlescent powder to my acrylic medium and painted my large butterfly.  The combination gives it a light opalescent shimmer.

I added some music to help frame the butterfly collage and did the same process of applying paint and sanding down until I found a look I was happy with.  Then I found and cut out the word ‘HOME’ from a magazine.  I applied that with acrylic medium and coated it with layers of paint/medium mix.  Finally I traced the letters with a black permanent marker and once again added paint until I was happy with how it looked.

While trying to find something to put in the empty place where the quote is I used an acrylic stamp and my acrylic medium and stamped a few snowflakes onto the background then I lightly sprinkled it with a clear glitter.

Finally, using shell paper (rice paper with bits of shell embedded) I added journaling strips and wrote my quote.  I added a few more strips of shell paper randomly to tie it in and used my whitewash technique on these strips.

I hope you enjoy this collage, and find inspiration to create something yourself.

Mixed Media On Muslin

// November 20th, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

I love doing Mixed Media on so many different surfaces. I like to show other Artists that you don’t have to be stuck by not having canvas or the normal to do Art. I took a piece of thick Muslin and ripped some stitches from all sides to give it the raggedy look and then painted yellow.

Once the paint was dry I layed a full stencil down and used Faber- castell black gelato in the middles and sprayed glitter mist all over the full stencil and let it dry. I love this messy part t is beautiful, but i love to add more and more!

My favorite thing is the gelatos. They go on so easy and have so many different applications that you can really go crazy. I will say I did restrain myself from going wild and I sprayed my fabric with water and then added different pinks all around and used my brush to disperse their color and add depth. I then outlined the stencil (which was a rose) with the Faber-castell pitt Artist Pen in dark pink to make the roses stand out more.

Drawing is one of my favorite things to do so I thought I would add a quick drawing I did and kind of colored her in a bit playing with ideas. Once I had her drawn I then cut her out and glued her down to the muslin. I painted her with acrylic paints to add more depth to her look.

One of my favorite things to do is add quotes. I use them on paintings, in my journals and in my every day life. Anais Nin is one of my favorite poets and a quote I live by and by which made me try out for the Design Team was the quote I used on my project. “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” I added that and a few embellishments to her in her hair and around her neck for a few extra “Kelly touches” I call them. I love the way it came out and it will hang on the wall by my desk to remind me to take one risk a day and not be afraid.

MY Made it Monday-DAY of DEAD Girl

// October 29th, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog, madeitmonday, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

SO we have been hanging tight over Sandy who is going to hit us even harder than it is now tonight and tomorrow. I have been Arting and Recording the past few days to make a few videos and PLAY while I can-hoping electric doesn’t go out.
With Day of the dead coming up soon I like to do a page for it. I like to represent my son and celebrate him in his death. Maybe only in my crazy head it makes sense but…. for those who know me…I AM CRAZY lol. I did a page and made 2 videos on it

I have to paint the outside of her black yet but i will finish that today. I hope you enjoy the videos and show us what you made. Keep safe and Many Blessings!

New pendants, old media- and cross stich fabric isn’t just for stiching

// October 15th, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog, madeitmonday

Here’s what was on my table this weekend. I made a whopping huge bunch of molds out of my own carvings last year, and some of them did become ceramic beads. But in my move, my kiln, well, I think it’s busted. At least, I’m too scared to plug it in. So I decided to make the pendants in polymer clay and see how they turn out. Plus, I had been wanting to do a more in depth experiment with my Martha Stewart glass paint in translucent frost- mixed with alcohol inks and re-inkers.

The paint is really cool, it has some toothy scruff to it and it takes the ink really well. So instead of buying all the colors, I just mix little bits at a time- one drop of ink goes a long way when you are making translucent paint.

Kira Slye's polymer pendants

Here they are, there are still some finishing touches- such as, I’ll be soldering them. Yes- you read that right. With a little care and practice, you can solder a polymer clay pendant.

And I have big plans for that Aida cloth- it’s a beautiful linen color and I’m going to sew myself an ipad pouch, after I get out my paints and paint it and sew stuff on it first. THEN I’ll make it into a purse :)

Tuesday Schmoozeday Art Journal Play

// October 2nd, 2012 // Comments Off // Kids Crafts, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Things Crafty Classes, Tuesday Shmoozeday

Today on my Tuesday Schmoozeday I chose to talk about Art journals. I concentrated on healing ones but discussed many other types, and how easy it is with one piece of paper to make 4 different pages to use.
I also discussed that you do not have to be an Artist and draw and sketch, you can use magazines and old books to cut words and pictures from to make your very own art journal page and then add them together as you do more. Here is the link to the show’s replay and if you have any questions…just ask!
I also put in the discussion section a question if you would like to do the meditative project I did at the end of my show-by drawing a line in all directions and coloring them in with whatever you have around the house. I love this form of meditation and it’s very centering to me.
I love comments and any questions so do not hesitate! We all love the interaction with you! Don’t forget to check out my Knitting 101 Class and I will have others coming in the future!
Here are a few pictures from today.

MY ART JOURNAL PAGE FROM LIVE SHOW

// July 19th, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Uncategorized

I had such a blast on my live show the other day. We have a few kinks to work out early on in the show, but we got them ironed out rather quickly. I haven’t been on live in months and months so that was my first foray into Live again, so I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit nervous, but by the end of the show, I thought it came out good. On the live show, I showed how I like to do layers in a Moleskine journal using different techniques and layers. Here is the live show-HERE (Just give a few minutes as we were figuring out before it starts!)

In this video, I show how I added a paper butterfly using three different sizes for added dimension. I glittered and played with a few different techniques to give you an idea of the variety of things you can try and play with. You can see that HERE

I love having journals to play with and practice in because you really don’t have to have an intended outcome. You can just PLAY! In the future I will show you how to make an inexpensive journal using paper lunch bags from the dollar store OR just from scrapbook paper you have at home with string or yarn. You do not have to be a professional binder in the way that I do it. I think art should be fun and if you don’t try out new techniques from time to time, how will you know what works and what doesn’t? Plus, you might just discover your new favorite technique!

Any questions just ask and I will help you or one of the many talented people on our http://thingscrafty.ning can help. It is free to sign up and there are so many exciting things on there and such talented people. Please enjoy the videos and subscribe to mine at Knittingandthings and the Polymerclaytv/thingscrafty youtubes. Thank you

Nature Items used in Art

// June 28th, 2012 // Comments Off // Blog, Kids Crafts, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

I love nature. I am continually inspired by nature and I love using it in my art. The neat thing with this approach is that you can have children help or create their own and it shows them how to look at and use things found in nature differently.

Have you ever walked outside on a perfect, breezy and warm spring day and not been inspired or felt at peace with yourself and the earth for a few minutes? Have you ever wondered what to make for the man in your life that you could put your heart, soul and positive energy in to remind him to breathe? Or even to make art for yourself to look at and mindlessly remember where you were when you chose those items to get you back on track?

I made my husband this piece, and it needs a few things to finish it off, but I want you to see what I mean. I had painted a red background inlaid with a few bird transfers. I still need to touch up a few things as you can see but I think you will get the idea! I took leaves and wrapped them on a few twigs with hemp string and then bordered it with twigs and acorns (the leaves, twigs and acorns came right from our backyard). It is on a canvas and I think once I fix a few things I will keep it raw. This has been hanging on a wall in his office for a year because he loved it so much but when I see it I cringe with what I want to fix on it!

Imagine taking your children on a hike and them picking interesting things they see, and then making their own canvas or even just gluing the items down on paper. It’s a great way for them to use their imagination to create and preserve the day in their mind while getting up close and personal with the beautiful natural world around us.
