Thrift Shop Thursday 5/16/13 – Tie Dye Dress

HELLER :D

Oh my goodness, I have got something super cool to show you this week, but first, I have to tell you about my shopping trip.

I needed some plant pots this weekend, so I stopped by the thrift store to see if they had any. Unfortunately, they did not, but since I was there, I figured I would look around.  Keep in mind, this was not my regular day to record Thrift  Shop Thursday, so I did not have my camcorder with me!

Normally when I go to the thrift store, I have a system. I start with the candles, move to the craft section, head over to the books, followed by the housewares, furniture, clothes and finally finishing at the boutique. This week, however, I veered from my normal path. It was like something was pulling me to work with fabric, so I listened to my instincts and headed straight for the clothing section.

I was just looking through the clothes for some unique fabric when I discovered this weeks item. It was a plus size (5 X) dress and even though it was entirely too big for me, I KNEW I had to have it! Luckily I had my phone with me and I was able to whip it out and shoot the video footage of the find!!!

DSC07483

Fast forward to this weeks regular (recorded) T S T  trip – I got NUTHIN’! I searched the ENTIRE store and didn’t find a single thing that inspired me or even had any potential for altering! I am sooo glad I had my phone with me when I found that dress because if I hadn’t I would have probably created something I wasn’t really happy with… and that wouldn’t be very nice, now would it Precious.

I have already finished making the skirt and I can’t wait to share the video with you on Mixed MEdieology Monday!

*Another little behind the scenes tidbit – You can’t tell it, but since I had already found the dress (and altered it!) by the time I shot this weeks footage, I am actually wearing the finished skirt in this weeks Thrift Shop Thursday Video! Sooo, it’s kind of like I time traveled… I am wearing the item to FIND the item ;) *

Please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel.  Don’t forget to share it with your friends ;)

My blog will be changing within the next couple of weeks, so keep watching for some big announcements.

That is it for today.  I will see you on Monday!

Thrift Shop Thursday 5/9/13 – With Special Guest Robyn Couillard!

// May 9th, 2013 // No Comments » // Art Groups, Blog, Kids Crafts, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Needlearts, Stich, Felt, Sewing, Thursday Themeday

I have just finished editing this weeks video and I am STILL cracked up laughing!!!!!

My dear friend Robyn Couillard flew to Norfolk from Minnesota for a visit. While she was here, we took a trip to the thrift store and she was awesome (and brave) enough to make a special guest appearance on the show. This was the most fun I have ever had at the thrift store and I have NO idea how I am EVER going to top this one!

Be sure to stick around after the talkie bit to see some behind the scenes footage ;)

Mixed MEdieology Monday 3/14/13 – Wizard Of Oz Post Card

// April 2nd, 2013 // Comments Off // Blog, Kids Crafts, madeitmonday, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

Hey Everybody, It’s Edie!

For today’s project, I used a page from my Wizard Of Oz book to create a simple, hand painted post card.

Mixed MEdieology Monday 3/25/13 Hand Painted Tyvek Bag

// March 25th, 2013 // Comments Off // Art Groups, Blog, Kids Crafts, madeitmonday, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Needlearts, Stich, Felt, Sewing

This weeks project was sooooooo simple to make! I was able to complete the entire bag in less than two hours (including drying time) which is some kind of record for me! LOL!

DSC_0292

I picked up a few Tyvek envelopes from my local post office and cut them apart. My bag is made with three envelope, but you could actually make it with just two. I just chose to not use the seamed side of the Tyvek envelopes. For the handle, I cut the ends off of the belt I got from the thrift store last week and stitched them to the inside of the bag.

DSC_0294

I didn’t know it at the time, but I should have sealed my paint before sewing the bag. When I flipped it inside out after sewing, some of the paint started to chip. If you make one of these, be sure to let it dry completely and then seal it before sewing.

I have already used this bag to carry some art supplies to a friends house and it works great! The Tyvek is extremely strong, so I don’t have to worry about the bag tearing or falling apart if I put heavy items into it.

DSC_0296

I love that I now have a personalized bag that I can use over and over again. I’m sure it will be a conversation starter!

I hope you enjoyed this project and I would love to see YOUR hand painted Tyvek bags. Leave me a comment with a link to see your finished projects. If you liked this post, please share it and tell your friends :)

Until next time,
BIG HUGS!!!!!!

Thrift Shop Thursday 3/15/13 Winner Announced and a New Giveaway!

// March 16th, 2013 // Comments Off // Blog, Kids Crafts, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Uncategorized

Hey Everybody, It’s Edie!

I know, I know, It’s not Thursday. Trust me…. I know :(

This has been one hell of a week, but I have persevered and I am ready to move on! But that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to vent a little bit here.

First of all, I completely lost an entire day because I was sick. Not ‘sick, sick’ but still sick. I woke up Wednesday morning to the room spinning! I had never experienced that kind of dizziness before, but the shit in my house  was LITERALLY spinning around the room. I somehow managed to drive my son (20 minutes) to school and then (20 minutes) home again before my husband came home from work to take me to the doctor. It ended up being this sinus/ear tube issue causing the dizziness and I was down for the count for two days.

Once I felt well enough to finish editing the video for this weeks episode, it was one computer issue after another. I won’t go into the hellish details, but it involved multiple failures, a trip to Walmart, two melt downs, a re-record and an hour and a half on the phone with Apple to resolve my issue. All is well now, but from now on, the FIRST thing I am going to do (in the future) when something doesn’t work properly is a system update and restart of my Mac. Infuriating friggin’ machinery.

Alrighty! Enough of that. On to this weeks episode :D

I found an awesome bag of goodies this week and there was even a surprise in the bag ‘o goodies that took me back to a very happy childhood memory.

I also announce the winner of my giveaway AAAAAAAND tell you about my NEXT giveaway and how YOU can WIN!

If you enjoy these weekly adventures, tell your friends and subscribe :)

See you on Mixed MEdieology Monday.

mixed mEDIEology Monday 3/4/13 – Spring Flowers From Truck Tires

// March 4th, 2013 // Comments Off // Blog, Kids Crafts, madeitmonday, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

Hey everybody, it’s Edie :)

Welcome to mixed mEDIEology Monday!

This weeks project is the first collaboration of Thrift Shop Thursdays and mixed mEDIEology Monday. If you missed last weeks post, here is what you need to know…

Each week I will be making a (video) trip to the thrift store. I will then use the items I find on Thursday to create a project to share with you on Mondays. If you want to see what I got this week, you can find that video here.

This weeks project is a mixed media painting. I am soooooooo tired of the cold weather and Spring can not get here soon enough for me! I need warmth, sunshine and lush things growing.

DSC07381

One of the bags I bought at the thrift shop last week was a wooden model of a truck. The round pieces I used in this painting were “supposed” to be truck tires, but I saw them as flowers, so I painted them, glitterfied them and stuck them in a Spring Garden!

Composimold Review and Honeycomb ATC

// February 5th, 2013 // Comments Off // Blog, Kids Crafts, madeitmonday, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft

Do you ever buy random things because you just KNOW you’re going to make great things with it… someday??? That was the case with the neon green, silicone pot holder I bought several months ago. It looked like a honeycomb and I just KNEW I could make something super cool with it. I wanted to use it as a stamp, put it in a painting and at least five other projects came to mind just by holding and squishing that piece of random inspiration. The problem was, I didn’t want to USE the potholder because I only had one. I thought it was impossible to mold because it is so flexible and thin that is, until I discovered Compisimold! Compisimold is a pourable, food safe silicone mold that you can melt and remold over and over again and it was exactly what I needed for this project.

You can view BOTH full video tutorials below.

I don’t own a microwave, so I melted my Composimold on the stove and poured it over the potholder. Once it was completely cooled, I removed the original and I had a reusable mold that looked just like my potholder! The Composimold did have a lot of bubbles which would ruin most molds but it actually enhanced this particular project, so I didn’t mind too much in the end. The Composimold instructions recommend stirring often, but I think that is what caused all of the bubbles. If I had just let it sit and melt, I don’t think I would have had near as many bubbles.

Once the mold was ready, I broke out my Creative Paperclay® and started playing. I rolled out my Paperclay over the top of the mold which gave me an absolutely fantastic honeycomb texture, and then I cut my ATC out of the textured Creative Paperclay®.

I let the ATC dry completely and then I painted it, glitterfied it and added the honeybee embellishment.

I wrote out my quote, painted the paper and glued it to the ATC and then I covered the text with Glosssy Accents to make it shine.

Overall I was pretty happy with the Composimold and I plan on making more projects with it. If you have something that is an awkward shape or just too soft to mold, you may want to give Composimold a try. It worked great with the Creative Paperclay® and I am really happy with the way this ATC turned out.

I hope you enjoyed this project and I hope you have a Valentine’s Day that is filled with love!

BIG HUGS!

Super Fast (STRESS FREE) Ornaments

// December 3rd, 2012 // Comments Off // Art Jewelry, Beads, & Glass, Blog, Kids Crafts, madeitmonday, Mixed Media, Journals & Papercraft, Things Crafty Classes

Hey Everybody, it’s Edie,

I can not believe it is already December!!!! This year has flown by and the Holiday Season is now upon us.

With the holiday season comes gift giving, decorating, crafting and blog hops!

With that in mind I have created a BRAND NEW CLASS “Mixed Media For The Holidays” and it is now available!

In the class, I teach you how to make three holiday projects that will help you in all of your decorating, crafting and gift giving endeavors. There is even a bonus lesson for an extra embellishment ;)
All of the projects are made using simple, common household items and inexpensive crafty supplies!

After finishing the projects for my class, I was on a Holiday crafting roll! I was able to create the base for these TEN ornaments in less than 10 minutes using the technique I am sharing with you today. These ornaments are so simple, fast and stress free, you will be able to produce a handful of them before the holiday cookies finish baking in the oven!

DSC07092

These ornaments are perfect for teacher’s gifts, class projects, family crafting, art swaps, unexpected visitors, all of those people you would like to get something for but just don’t have the money, your mail carrier, vet, favorite coffee barista and the list goes on and on!!!!

DSC07106

Simply roll out some Delight, Paperclay or polymer clay of your choice. Brush a stamp with water and tap off the excess. Press the stamp into the clay and cut into desired shapes! Simple, simple, simple :) You could even use cookie cutters instead of a straight blade to give your ornaments even more personality.

DSC07093

Paint, embellish and glitterfy to your hearts content and then share them with everyone you know.
A great idea would be to have these hanging on a wreath designated for visitors. As they leave, they can choose an ornament to take home and display.

DSC07095

I hope you enjoy this project and I hope it helps to make your holiday season just a little less stressful.
BIG, BIG Hugs!!!!!!
