Nicole Gilette

Hi, I’m Nikki Gillette. I have a hard time nailing down what I really am because I am always changing.
The best aspects of my life are my husband of over 15 years, my two children -a son and a daughter-
(usually, unless they are fighting) and my pets. We have a 2 year old Golden Retriever, Tucker, who has
yet to meet someone who isn’t his friend (at least in his mind) and 2 cats who are unique in their own
way, Dennis – a girl cat (and believe me, there is a story behind that cat) and Pilchard – the cat my son
named after ‘Bob the Builder’.

I have been crafting ever since I can remember and I don’t think there is a medium I haven’t explored.
I was ecstatic when the idea of mixed media arts became so prominent because it is a medium where
anything goes! I don’t like to play by the rules, as a matter of fact if you give me a rule I will do my best
to stretch, if not break it! I do a lot of scrapbooking and paper crafts but don’t like to limit myself to
one thing. I try to stretch the applications of paper crafting far beyond the scrapbook layouts, cards
and other traditional crafts. Have you ever made a purse out of a scrapbook paper pack? How about a
music box from an old book? Even with the more traditional paper crafting I like to push the envelope
a little. When is the last time you used a crushed water bottle as part of a scrapbook layout? I hope to
challenge you to push the bounds of what you know about paper, and join me as I do the same.

Just don’t be too upset if we take a sidetrack every once in a while into unfamiliar ground. I firmly
believe that crafting mistakes are the best thing EVER, they lead to new ideas. (At least that is what I
tell my friends if I screw something up.) My favorite time spent at my dining room corner desk in my
craft room is when I am just playing with new products, combining them with some of the tried and true
techniques I’ve used in the past to come up with something unique and amazing. I have JUST started to
keep an art journal to keep track of the ideas/techniques I’ve tried. Do you have any idea how hard it
is to remember all the different things you’ve tried over the course of several years? Darned memory
anyway….

So, please join me on my journey through the creative world. I know where I’ve started but have no
idea where we will end up.

Welcome Edie Cournoyer to Things Crafty Design Team

// August 3rd, 2012 // Comments Off // Contributing Artists

new Things Crafty design team member

I am a wife, mother, mentor and entrepreneur. I am brave, bold and outgoing. I am a free spirit and I
think outside of the box. I am a self taught mixed media artist with a very eclectic style and a passion for
trying new things. I host a live stream art show (weekly) that features a little bit of everything from art
journaling to altered items, assemblage pieces to art dolls. I have a YouTube channel where I frequently
share tutorials and fun videos of my artwork. I run a Facebook group, for women, that focuses on
working through the emotional side of weight loss through art. I also love to be creative in the kitchen
and I know my way around a sewing machine. I have done arts and crafts of all kinds my whole life and I
fell in love with mixed media art about three years ago. I enjoy many different things and I love sharing
my art and experiences with other people.

More about me -

I have an eclectic style that is hard to define in a few short words. I like a little bit of everything and
I am always trying new things or incorporating new styles into my art. Some of my favorite mediums
are water color crayons, acrylic paints, stamps, collage, ephemera and Creative Paperclay and I often
layer several of these mediums in my pieces. I really enjoy playing with my supplies and trying new
techniques. I am drawn to vintage images and I like to incorporate them into my work. I adore whimsy
girls and will frequently add them to a project. I also enjoy drawing portraits, so any time I see an
interesting face in a photo or ad I save it in a file for inspiration. I love steampunk and have recently
begun incorporating that into more of my art as well. I also like to create assemblage art as well as
mixed media art dolls.

Why would I like to be on the team? I am excited to try new things and I always have a couple of
projects in the works. I feel like I want to try EVERYTHING and I have a file FULL of ideas for my ‘next’
project. I like to think outside of the box and I am a do-it-yourself kind of girl. I love to look at something
and figure out how I can make my OWN version of it. I would much rather put in the time and effort
to create my own unique thing than to have the same, average thing as everyone else. I feel like I
have a lot to offer the design team because I will use the products in several different and sometimes
unconventional ways.

I LOVE going to the thrift store and finding an item to repurpose or reuse. I think there is always a way to
add or change inexpensive items and make them new again. An old book becomes a treasured heirloom
after it is altered and a warped, “useless” candle becomes a wax melt while the jar becomes the new
home of a ‘captured creature.’

Martiel Beatty

// March 6th, 2012 // Comments Off // Contributing Artists

Martiel is the founder and fiber artist of the online shop and blog, Sewmantra; which is where modern, funky and tradition meet upcycled, recycled, and reclaimed materials – the outcome is a tried and true  collection of designs… reinvented. She is the writer behind the “Confessions of A Capricious Crafter” and “Crafty Stuff from A to Zymosan” as well as the founder of the South County Artists and Crafters Guild in Annapolis, Maryland. She has also appeared as a guest blogger on several craft sites where she has published her creative ideas on how to use things you already have to make something with utility. As a social media expert, she uses her talent in writing, savvy techy skills and unique perspective to challenge the status quo. Her goals are to introduce the world to sewing their mantra, and in doing so, bringing back tradition wrapped in recycled bits. As she approaches the close of her first year in business, she is excited to share her ideas, funny tales, and untold artsy-crafty project ideas with you. Martiel works out of her home art studio in Shady Side, Maryland. As she explores area thrift stores and estate sales hunting for another great piece – she will never be found without her notebook in hand, waiting for a moment to jot down something that inspires her.

Pssst! To say Martiel’s name simply say “Mart” and “Teal” together quickly, and you’ve got it!
