Made it Monday: The Kitchen Table Project

// September 24th, 2012 // madeitmonday, Uncategorized

When we moved into this apartment at the end of 2011 my parents gave us an unfinished table as a house warming gift.  As you can see over the past 8 or some months this table has seen some use.  I finally decided it was time to give the table a bit of a creative touch.
This is what it looked like before.
 I decoupaged the top with some vintage book pages.  All that I used to do this was some slightly watered down Elmer’s Glue all and a sponge brush.
 Here’s what it looked like when that step was done.
 Now I could have left the table just like that, stained the legs sealed it with some polyurethane and been done with it.  But what fun would that have been?
For the next step, I made some homemade alcohol inks.  I used 91% rubbing alcohol and some sharpies for this.

 First I painted a coat of blue and purple alcohol in on and let that dry.  Then I had my kids help me splatter paint the table with the alcohol inks.
This is what the finished top looks like.
After this I took the table apart and took it outside.  I stained the legs and based of the table black and gave it a few generous coats of polyurethane.

 Here is the finished product.  Now I have a completely original, one of a kind kitchen table.
